The Power Plant presents
Adaptation: Between Species Exhibition open now until September 12, 2010

The Power Plant’s summer group exhibition highlights interspecies encounters. What happens when humans, animals and the natural world meet? What forms of communication, miscommunication, intimacy, and exchange ensue?

‘Adaptation: Between Species’ presents the work of leading international artists alongside that of newer figures whose work has gained international attention. Ranging in tone from reverent to decidedly iconoclastic, and created with media including photography, film/video, sculpture, and painting, works in the exhibition examine the lure of primeval states and primitive behaviours, and the urge to understand oneself as wild at heart.

Who are we feeding?

You might already know that the harvest from the Teaching Garden and Kitchen Garden is donated to the North York Harvest Food Bank- an average of 700 lbs a year! What you might no know is that other creatures browse at the TBG buffet too! Groundhogs, leaf miners, caterpillars, beetle larvae and now- oh dear, we have deer! Even in Toronto a city of millions, deer live happily in Toronto’s valleys and snack on both wild and domestic plants. They have been leaving their tracks and evidence of chewing in the Swiss Chard!

Guests will enjoy an authentic Italiano dinner, complete with wine and sounds of Italian music. Sonia Day, Toronto Star columnist and author of Incredible Edibles: 43 Fun Things To Grow In the City will give you tips on growing these italian-themed vegetables in her usual exuberant way.

Paul Zammit, TBG's Director of Horticulture, has planned a special basil-based herb container demonstration that we'll be the grand prize for the evening's draw.

The proceeds for this event go towards making the TBG a new partnership with two new hives of busy bees to work the extensive flower beds of Toronto Botanical Garden and adjacent Edwards Gardens. Set to bee established in TBG's Library Courtyard, the hive of activity can be safely viewed from the Weston Family Library or the glass hallway to the Moriyama Foyer. The courtyard garden will be redesigned in  to become a pollinator-paradise offering pollen, nectar and water sources from early spring to late fall.
