Please leave a detailed message with your school name, class size, preferred date and program. Registrations are accepted strictly on a first-come basis. Register early for best selection.

School Programs are offered from Tuesday through Friday and are held outdoors in the TBG's Teaching Garden or indoors in The James Boyd Children's Centre. Please call 416-397-1355 to register.

  • $7 registration fee per student per program
  • Sessions take place between 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
  • Maximum of 30 students per program
  • No charge for each adult supervisor for every five students
  • ALL Teaching Garden programs include outdoor components, please ensure all participants are dressed for the weather

We offer both indoor and outdoor programs.  All of our programs designed to support and enhance the Ontario Ministry of Education's Science and Technology Curriculum. Lines in italics refer to topics identified the Ontario Curriculum.

New school visit packages include valuable information such as directions to the gardens, a checklist of items to bring and curriculum expectations met during the program and activities to do with your class. 

KG: Munchkins in the Garden OUTDOORS       
[TG11STMG] Children will use their five senses to explore seasonal changes through simple garden games. Learn about cycles in nature by planting bulbs in the fall and seeds in the spring and discover first-hand how our red wiggler worms create soil.

[TG11SJSR] Students will learn about the different seasons by exploring what plants and animals do during fall, winter, spring and summer. Students plant a seed to take back to school with them where they can watch it grow!

Grade 1: Eyes on Life OUTDOORS                            
[TG11STEL] What do plants and people need to live? Are they the same things? Through hands-on activities and dramatic games, students will become plants and animals to find out the difference. Discover how the behaviours of plants and animals change with the seasons.

Grade 1: Seed Needs INDOORS
[TG11SJSN] Learn about the needs of plants and animals through stories, games and activities. Students will meet the red wiggler worms, examine living plants and animals and plant their own seed to bring back to school.

Grade 2: Garden Dwellers OUTDOORS
[TG10STGD] Can you guess which animals make the Teaching Garden their home? You might be surprised at the answer! Students will discover the wide range of creatures that live here and learn how they meet their needs all year long through animal games, scavenger hunts and hands-on activities in the garden.

Grade 2: Amazing Animals INDOORS
[TG11SJAA] Do all animals have bones? What is metamorphosis? How can we help garden animals? Children will be able to answer these questions and more as they explore our collection of animals and insects.

NEW! Grade 2: Wind and Water HIKE
[TG11SHWW] This guided tour through Edwards Gardens and Wilket Creek Park will encourage students to see, hear and feel the power of wind and water at work. Visit a waterfall, an old mill wheel and even build your own pinwheel.

Grade 3 Soil: That's Not Dirt!                      
[TG11STND] Soil is so much more than dirt! Through hands-on activities students will become soil detectives and explore the formation and components of the organic and inorganic parts of soil. Meet the friendly decomposers at work in the garden!

Grade 3 Plants: Growing Green OUTDOORS
[TG11STGG] Plants come in all shapes and sizes! Examining the tallest to the smallest, hands-on activities will help children understand the importance of all plants. Students will help plant vegetables in our organic vegetable garden and find out the six things all plants need to thrive.

Grade 3 Soil: From the Ground on Down INDOORS
[TG11SJFG] Look down. Look way down! There’s a world of life below our feet. Children will get up close and personal with decomposers who make soil, discover how soil supports life, and examine rocks and minerals that make up the foundation of the inorganic parts of soil.

Grade 3 Plants: Plant Pandemonium INDOORS
[TG11SJPP] Children will meet our insect-eating plants, learn how seeds travel and plant a seed to care for back at school. Through games and activities, students learn how all life relies on these green beings.

Grade 4: Where the Wild Things Roam OUTDOORS
[TG11STWW] Hands-on activities and outdoor games introduce habitat concepts and the busy community of birds, insects, plants and animals that live in our gardens and ravine. Students discover the connections between living things in the food web and how they respond to seasonal changes.

Grade 4: Who Needs Habitat? INDOORS
[TG11SJWH] Students are introduced to habitat concepts through interactive stations that help students explore the fascinating world of producers, consumers and decomposers. Plant a seed, dissect an owl pellet and watch the worms at work.

Grade 4: Rocks, Minerals and Erosion
HIKE

[TG11SHRM] Students will discover the difference between igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock and how each are created, search for their own special stone, look for examples of erosion in the landscape and try out some rockin’ science experiments on this guided tour through Edwards Gardens and Wilket Creek.

GIVE THANKS – TBG AND NORTH YORK HARVEST FOOD BANK JOINT PROGRAMS
Looking for a way to connect your class to local food, health and nutrition and a giving community? Learn about plants and soils as you spend the morning planting or harvesting at the Toronto Botanical Garden then travel to the North York Harvest Food Bank to spend the afternoon sorting food, touring the food bank and participating in TBG-designed lessons from the Physical Education, Healthy Living Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum.
