EARTH DAY CELEBRATIONS

 

Family Programs:
Come join us for a celebration of our beleaguered bee sisters! Bring your dancing shoes and meet at The James Boyd Children's Centre for a tour of the gardens to learn how bees communicate. Then come back to the centre to create your own bee craft! Be sure to look for our bee experts from the University of Guelph. Kids and Family nature walk, 12 noon to 12:45 p.m. Admission free, no registration required.

Bee Craft Workshops (Registration required)

Public $15 per family / Members $10 per family. A family is 2 adults and 2 children, $2 per additional child. Each family group may make up to two bee crafts or one per child.

Wilket Creek Ravine
With Friends of the Don East
Sonia Leslie and James McArthur
Join James McArthur, executive director of Friends of the Don East, and Sonia Leslie, chair of the TBG Tour Guides, for a unique and educational walk through the ravine system as part of our Earth Day Celebrations. James will discuss the natural history, vegetation, wildlife and environmental topics and challenges particular to the ravine system, including wet weather flow, toxics, and invasive plants. James will offer alternatives and solutions including what the average person can do to mitigate these problems. Sonia will provide historical insight into Edwards Gardens and Wilket Creek, a place close and dear to her heart. Discover the fascinating history of the families behind this beautiful Toronto Park.

Celebrate the 28th Earth Day at the TBG! This year’s theme is BEES and other beneficial insects for the garden. Enjoy talks, walks, and learn the bee dance on this fun and educational day in the gardens. Come and view the “truth window” and learn about this fascinating sustainable building design. Programs for adults and families.

Spring in the Garden: The Big Dig!

It’s Earth Day and the perfect time to start digging in your garden. Our experienced gardeners will show you how and what to plant for summer, how to divide and transplant existing plants, what to add for healthy soils, including spring fertilizing tips and organic methods for pest and disease control, and a quick overview of spring pruning. (Pair this afternoon course with our evening course, Pruning Made Easy). Your garden will never look better!

Pruning Made Easy

It’s Earth Day and what better way to celebrate than by coming to the TBG for a session on keeping your trees and shrubs healthy and beautiful. Learn when and how to prune trees, shrubs and vines in this demonstration and lecture. Pruning for plant health, the production of fruit and berries and aesthetics will be featured along with a discussion of pruning tools. With spring around the corner this is a timely topic for any homeowner.
