Saturday, September 24, 12 noon to 4 p.m. It’s a time of celebration and giving back to our community. Come join the children of TBG programs to harvest the Teaching Garden and create and participate in art, music and drama with Discoverability. Buy your fall pumpkins and stunning pre-made outdoor urns, or take a free guided tour of the TBG and Edwards gardens, enjoy how-to demos and talks by Head Gardener Sandra Pella, and have your gardening questions answered by Toronto Master Gardeners. List of fun things to do and see: TBGKids and Discoverability Children’s activities for Harvest Day 2011 include, harvesting organic vegetables, food demonstrations, garden scavenger hunt, garden arts and crafts, drumming circle, interactive family theatre, planting garlic and a live acoustic performance by the band “Yes Please”. Children’s activities will take place in both the proposed Children’s Garden and the Teaching Garden. Heritage Toronto Tour Edwards Gardens and Toronto Botanical Garden Heritage Toronto Walking Tour (1.5 hours) at 10:30 a.m. Explore this natural heritage area and learn how it evolved from Alexander Milne’s pioneer farm and mill to Rupert Edward’s 1942 country estate to today’s public park and garden education centre. After the tour, take in the activities and displays of the Toronto Botanical Garden’s Harvest Day activities. Afternoon TBG Tour Toronto Botanical Garden Walking Tour (1.5 hours) at 1:30 p.m. Looking for a special day out? Experienced and knowledgeable TBG guides will make your tour exciting, informative and memorable. Visit our 17 themed gardens and enjoy our Harvest Festival all on the same day. Tours are available for children, students and seniors groups. Taste of the Garden Join us on the TBG’s annual Harvest Day for a delightful lunch brimming with autumn’s bounty. A feast for the eyes as well as the tastebuds, this Harvest Lunch will feature local autumn foods such as squash, kale and edible flowers – with a twist! Toronto Master Gardeners Toronto Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer your gardening questions and offer expert advice. TTBG Fall Plant Sale Plant sale will feature planted urn sleeves, a convenient way to spruce up your planters, as well as a selection of perennials, kales, cabbages, & the usual fall items with a touch flare. TBG gardeners will be on hand to plant one up for you on the spot as well and feel free to listen in for 15 minutes at the top of every hour for seasonal what-to-do’s in the garden with Head Gardener, Sandra Pella. Throughout the year, the TBGKids instructors guide school groups through the planting and care of the Teaching Garden. Encouraging children to learn about where their food comes from and introducing them to the wonders of fresh produce they pick themselves lures campers and visitors back to the TBG for Harvest Day every year. Throughout the season campers, students, families and garden volunteers harvest an average of 700 pounds of fresh produce to donate to the North York Harvest Food Bank. |
