The Entry
Garden Walk is inspired by Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf's New Wave
style. Perennials, grasses, shrubs and trees were carefully selected for
their architectural form, texture, autumn colour and winter silhouette.
Planting is done in naturalistic waves that form a "sophisticated
meadow".
HIGHLIGHTS
- This landscape
has been achieved through a
selection of plants presented in new combinations and punctuated with
cultivars of shrubs and trees including witch hazel (Hamamelis
spp.), viburnum (Viburnum spp.), lilac (Syringa spp.)
and hydrangea (Hydrangea spp.). More important than colour, which
can be short-lived, is the form, structure and texture of the plants
through the four seasons.
- Some of
the perennials growing here are vigorous cultivars that have been tested
at Oudolfs own nursery farm in The Netherlands.
- Seed heads
remain on some of the plants for
winter interest, allowing some varieties to selfseed and provide food
for birds.
