PRESIDENT'S CHOICE SHOW GARDEN

This garden is divided into two narrow sections. In the first section, evergreens, small trees and shrubs produce a colourful display of berries and fruit in the winter months. Miniature, dwarf and slow-growing evergreens and conifers demonstrate plants suitable for a small urban garden. At the back, a series of small beds are dedicated to plant trials. Developed in partnership with local plant growers and nurseries, it showcases new introductions of annuals, perennials, vines, roses and shrubs. Trials of spring-flowering bulbs are conducted in the evergreen garden area.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Miniature, dwarf and slow-growing evergreens and conifers selected for this garden showcase plants suitable for a small urban garden. Growth rates can vary from less than 2.5 centimetres a year for a miniature to up to 15 centimetres for a dwarf conifer. These plants add structure to a garden and provide year-round interest with their unique shapes, winter foliage, cones and fragrance. The shape or form of a conifer can be globose (round or spherical), prostrate (lying flat on the ground) or semi-prostrate, pyramidal (broad at the base and tapering to a point) or columnar (column-shaped). Many conifers provide food and shelter for small animals and birds.
  • A collection of low-growing, spreading sedums was planted around the conifers to demonstrate
low-maintenance groundcovers that, once established, require minimal care or watering.
  • At the back of this garden, a series of small beds is dedicated to plant trials. Developed in partnership with local plant growers and nurseries, it showcases new introductions of annuals, perennials, vines, roses and shrubs. Trials of spring-flowering bulbs are conducted in the evergreen garden area.
