Following many months spent clearing and preparing the area, Sara Katz and a team of volunteers begin planting this Friday, April 29th. Over time, the busy southwest corner of Lawrence Avenue and Leslie Street will be transformed into an urban forest. Upon completion, this area, which covers more than 23,000 square feet, will become one of the largest gardens on the TBG’s four-acre site. TBG’s new Woodland Walk and Bird Habitat will have multiple objectives: to significantly improve air quality through the planting of a wealth of trees, shrubs, perennials and groundcovers; to monitor the positive effect of these plantings on the surrounding environment when they are planted and as they grow to maturity; to educate and inspire young and old on the environmental benefits of mindful gardening, showing them by example, as well as didactic materials and audio-and-live tours, how to create bird and pollinator-friendly, sustainable home gardens that help fight air pollution; and to provide habitat for migrating songbirds, whose populations are declining at an alarming rate. “I am very excited to be part of the team working on the TBG's new Woodland Walk and Bird Habitat, “says Sara. “With my passion for native plants, I am eager to start planting the beautiful new garden that will show visitors how to provide shelter, food and nesting sites for birds. Come and take a stroll through, and watch our woodland grow.“ Sara Katz has designed residential gardens throughout Toronto. She studied landscape design and horticulture at Ryerson University and at the University of Guelph. An avid plant collector, she is a Toronto Master Gardener and a member of the Garden Writers Association. Her articles have appeared in numerous publications, including Canadian Gardening, Canadian Living and Trellis, the magazine of the Toronto Botanical Garden. Toronto Botanical Garden is grateful for the generous support of Live Green Toronto of the Woodland Walk and Bird Habitat.
